Big Garden Birdwatch

Back in 2018 I did something that was way out of my comfort zone! I was invited to take part in an advert for the 40th celebrations of the RSPB’s ‘Big Garden Birdwatch’.

The little section I appeared in ‘painting birds’ was used for several years to advertise the project, you can have a watch here.

Big Garden Birdwatch Advert

This came about as birds where one of the very first subjects I had begun to draw when I first began nature journaling.  I had been promoting the project on my social media channels, making time lapse paintings of my beautiful garden birds. Our family had been participating in the ‘Big Garden Birdwatch’ for several years, and when I began painting it felt like a great opportunity to count and paint at the same time.

This is one of the largest citizen science projects in the world, and there’s likely to be a similar project where you live.

For one hour at the end of January, this year between the 24th-26th January sit and count the garden birds that visit your garden.

It’s a great time to take a pause with a cuppa, and your family, and see what birds come to visit. It’s also the perfect chance to get to know your birds better by drawing them. So grab a pencil and a piece of paper and have a go.

I made these graphics as guidelines to help you sketch some of our garden birds here in the UK.

I’ve been promoting the ‘Big Garden Birdwatch’ for 8 years, you can also find a wonderful gallery of people who have had a go at sketching over on Instagram using the tag #bgbwsketchalong. Along with a few timelapse videos of my own painting.
